What it does & Overview
The What it does tab gives a fully derived, plain-English explanation of the object - nothing hard-coded per object. It covers what the object is for, an "In plain terms" call-out when the object shows a staging/interface pattern, what processing options steer, and notable developer comments with jump links.
The Overview tab shows object-wide statistics: table I/O counts, business function calls, and report interconnects. The sun and moon switch at the top right turns dark mode on and off. The browser tab reads ERX and the object name of the file you are viewing. The Radiation level gauge next to the title rates the selected file's complexity as Low, Medium or High, from its line count, sections, business functions and tables.
Sections / Execution order / Data selection
Sections lists every section (UBE) or form/control (Application) with its type, business view, and line count. Execution order and Data selection are UBE-only tabs showing run order and the object's data selection criteria - they're hidden automatically for Applications, where they don't apply.
Event Rules tab
The deepest tab in the app. Each section/control is collapsible, and shows:
- Line numbers - sequential, exactly like a real ER Extract. Lines that are parameters of a table I/O or business-function call inherit the number of the statement above them, since they're part of the same logical step.
- Commented lines: SHOWN / HIDDEN - the toolbar button hides every line that starts with ! (commented out in JDE). Line numbers are not renumbered, so the gaps show where they were. A jump to a hidden line shows them again.
- Event names (Initialize Section, Do Section, End Section…) appear as dark banners above each block of logic.
- Sticky section header - stays pinned to the top while you're scrolled deep into a long open section.
- Matching block - point at any line inside an If and the whole block lights up: True part in green, False part in amber, with the If, Else and End If lines boxed and a tag such as LEVEL 3 · TRUE PART on the If line. Switch it off with the Matching block box above the code.
- Compare two files - on the home screen choose COMPARE, add an older and a newer .par or ER Extract (or drop both at once) and press COMPARE. Events are matched by section name and event name; the list shows which are changed, new, gone or identical, and the right side shows the lines side by side with the changed words marked. Prev / Next (or n / p / F3) jump between changes. Comment-only changes and spacing are ignored unless you switch them on. Export differences saves a report.
- Level break header / footer labels - a section whose event rule names contain “Footer” (for example End Lvl Brk Footer Section) gets an LB FOOTER label next to its name, and “Header” gets LB HEADER. The label also shows on the event bar and in the Jump list. Switch it off with the LB labels box above the code.
- If flowchart - click ◇ Flowchart on an event bar (or on an If line) to open a panel on the right that draws the event as a flowchart: each If is a hexagon, TRUE goes down the left, FALSE down the right, and the paths rejoin. The page does not scroll when it opens. Drag the divider to make the panel wider or narrower (double-click it to reset). Drag the chart to move around, scroll to zoom (the percentage shows the zoom; the four-arrow button fits the chart to the view), and use the small overview to jump. Click a hexagon to open its True and False parts side by side under the chart (Side by side, Stacked, Copy as text) and to find it in the code; double-click to draw only that If; click a dashed box to open the Ifs inside it. This If only and Path to line views, and Open to level, Statements, Comments and Symbols options, are in the panel. The printer button prints the chart or saves it as a PDF. Pointing at a line of code lights up its box and the route to it. Esc closes the True / False view.
- Do Custom Section links - the section name inside Do Custom Section( ) is a link. Click it to go to that section in the same tab; the Back pill returns you to where you were.
- Fold If blocks - click the minus box beside an If to collapse it, and the plus box to open it again. Collapse all, Collapse inner and Expand all are above the code. Searching, jumping to a line or stepping through matches opens whatever is needed.
- Highlight the same word - select a word or phrase and every match lights up, with a count, Next and Previous (F3 / Shift+F3) starting from your selection, Whole word and Match case. Esc clears it.
- Pinned event name - the event (Initialize Section, Do Section…) stays pinned under the section header while you scroll. Jump to section / event lists every one.
- Search, Open all / Close all, and Go to line # to jump straight to any line number.
- Download this section or the whole listing as text.
Variables tab
Every operand in the object that carries a standard JDE prefix (VA, PO, SV/SL, BC/PC/TC, RI/RV/RC, TV, GC, and FI/FC for Applications) is catalogued and grouped by type. Click a variable to see every place it's used - each occurrence shows the exact line, a tag naming the table I/O statement or business function it's a parameter of, and a link that jumps straight to that precise line. A search box narrows the list to matching names.
Find text / Tables / External calls / Processing options
Find text full-text searches every line of ER, with clickable jumps. Tables lists every table touched with read/insert/update/delete counts. External calls shows business functions called and (UBEs) other reports launched. Processing options (UBE only) lists every option in use with a best guess at what each steers.
Ask tab
Ask plain-English questions - "What does this do?", "What uses a table?", "Where is a variable set?", "Which business functions does it call?" - or tap a suggested card. Cards and answers adapt automatically depending on whether you loaded a UBE report or an Application. Every answer is grounded in the parsed object, and any section or line it references is clickable.
UBE reports vs. Applications
The app recognises both JDE object types automatically. Applications (object names typically start with P) are organised by Forms → Controls instead of Sections, get extra FI/FC operand prefixes in the Variables tab, and hide the Execution order and Data selection tabs since they're not meaningful for interactive controls. Ask tab cards and wording adjust to match.
Loading: FILE or PASTE
The load box has a FILE | PASTE switch. FILE takes .par and .txt files by drag and drop or browse. PASTE is for ER Extracts only: paste the text and it is read at once (READ THIS does the same). Each paste appears in the loaded-files list as "Pasted ER Extract - <ReportName>", and pasting the same report again adds (1), (2)…. SAVE File downloads the pasted text as <ReportName>.txt; CLEAR empties the box.
Bookmarks & notes
In
Event rules, hover a line number and click the star to bookmark that line, then add an optional note. Bookmarked lines are highlighted and the note shows beside the line. The
My bookmarks panel above the list collects them all with a jump link to each.
- Auto-save: bookmarks are kept in your browser per report name and come back when you load the same report again.
- Export bookmarks / Restore from file: save them as a <ReportName>_bookmarks.json file and load it back later, on any computer. A file for a different report asks you to confirm.
- Edited extract? Each bookmark is matched by its line text and moves to the new position. Lines that no longer exist are listed as "not found" with the note kept.
Table impact, function where-used & option explorer
- Table impact (Tables tab): click a table to see every explicit Table I/O line for it - section, event, operation (writes in red) and line number - with the full column mapping under each statement. Filter to writes or reads only, collapse single mappings, or use MAPPINGS: SHOWN / HIDDEN for all.
- Function where-used (External calls tab): click a business function to see every call, the condition it sits under, and the values passed IN and OUT. Parameters mapped with an X (assigned, not passed) are shown as NOT PASSED.
- Processing option explorer (Processing options tab): click an option to see each value tested, what runs under it (tables, calls, error messages), the defaults the logic sets, and which sections would be affected if you changed it.
Export document (Word / PDF)
Export document… (Export as document in the round tools button at the bottom right) builds a document in your browser. Pick Word (.docx) or PDF, then choose what goes in: What it does, Tables, External calls, Processing options, Variables and Event rules. Event rules always include your bookmark notes as sticky notes at the exact line and a "Reviewer notes" list at the top; line numbers are optional. Tick Only the sections that have notes to keep the document small, or Only the bookmarked lines for the smallest one: each bookmarked line with its line number, section and note, plus 2 lines of code before and after it. Every page carries a page number and a diagonal "Exported from ERX" watermark. PDF mode opens the print window - choose Save as PDF.
Multiple files & printing
Upload more than one independent object at once and every one of them stays available - click any filename in the loaded-files panel to switch the active view. The round button at the bottom right holds Related apps, My bookmarks (a small pane you can drag anywhere), Export file and Import file (share an ER Extract with your bookmarks and notes as one file, with a choice to merge or replace on import) and Export as document.
Tips & tricks
- Point at any line in Event Rules and its If block lights up in the code; open the ◇ Flowchart to see where it sits in the whole event.
- Type a number into Go to line # to jump anywhere instantly - the numbers match what you'd see in a real ER Extract.
- Jumped away from Variables, Find, or Ask into Event Rules? Click the ← Back pill (bottom-left) to return to your exact scroll position, not just the top of the tab.
- Uploaded more than one object? Click any filename above Print/Save as PDF to switch between them.
- Click a variable's table-I/O or business-function tag in the Variables tab to see exactly which call it belongs to.
- A floating ↑ Top button appears once you scroll down, for a quick trip back to the top of the page.
- Bookmark the lines you care about as you read, then export the document with "Only the sections that have notes" for a short hand-over.
- Pasting is the quickest way in: copy the ER Extract text, paste it, and use SAVE File to keep a copy.
- Click a table name in the Tables tab, or a function name in External calls, to see everywhere it is used.
